Built in 1836 to carry slate by gravity, the Festiniog Railway was the world’s first public narrow-gauge line, passengers being carried for the first time on such a narrow gauge in 1865. Unintendedly it became Britain’s most scenic railway route and is run by our oldest surviving private railway company. With no passenger trains to be staffed until Easter, the Railway’s permanent staff are able to concentrate their efforts on restoration and maintenance. In Boston Lodge workshops locomotives will be undergoing overhaul and new coaches will be under construction.

Out of season, steam power is often used when there is heavy work to be done. 0-4-0 ‘Blanche’, from the abandoned Penrhyn Quarry Railway, backs down on to a ballast train at Minffordd. The disc signal was last used in 1923.
