  • * *

Following the decision to hold an afternoon A.G.M. this year, we are pleased to announce details of a loco-hauled charter train with special connections at Crewe for people from London and the Midlands which is being arranged by kind permission of the Manchester Division of British Rail for the event.

Some of the many features that will make this a very attractive day out at very reasonable cost are the chance to go loco-hauled from B. Ffestiniog and the time allowed for viewing the new F.R. station lay-out at Blaenau. For people not attending the A.G.M. an excellent coach tour of Snowdonia including the Festiniog Railway and the Llechwedd Slate Caverns has been arranged.

FESTINIOG RAILWAY

The Festiniog Railway Company was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1832 to build a line of 1 ft 11½ ins gauge to carry slate quarried at Blaenau Ffestiniog down to the harbour at Portmadoc thirteen miles away. Its history is a gem of industrial archaeology. In the second half of the nineteenth century it became a prototype for narrow gauge railways used to open up communications in many parts of the world.

Today with its trains of modern tourist coaches equipped with fully licenced buffet bars it is one of the major attractions of Snowdonia, the mountainous National Park of North Wales, and the views from a Festiniog train are something rarely equalled in these islands.

On the journey from Portmadoc the breathtaking panorama of Snowdonia on the one hand and Harlech Castle, Borth-y-Gest and the sea on the other gives way to the afforested valley of the River Dwyryd, seen from a commanding position on the hill-side as the train climbs to Tan-y-Bwlch Station, which is situated in a delightful bowl in the mountains round three sides of which run the trains.

Above Tan-y-Bwlch the scenery is more open with fine views South and East to Trawsfyndd, Ffestiniog, etc. Dduallt is the present temporary terminus where work is in progress building the new line to bypass the lake which has flooded the old route, and to take the line on to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The hill beside the station is a fine viewpoint and picnic site.
