John Jones was born in 1842 in Llanfrothen. He was a passenger guard on the FR starting before 1871 (maybe at the start of passenger services) and continuing until after 1891. In 1871 he lived in Britannia Terrace, Portmadoc but later lived in Penrhyn. The 1901 census shows him as a grocer living at Frongoch, Penrhyn. He was too young to have retired so maybe he was the victim of one of the FR's purges when times were bad.
