Llyn Cwellyn serves as a reservoir for a large area of Gwynedd and Ynys Mon. The railway runs along the eastern side of the lake before climbing towards Rhyd Ddu, offering excellent views northwards along the lake towards Bettws Garmon.

The farm in the foreground is Clogwyn y Gwîn; how long it may have been since wine was produced here must be a matter for speculation.
