The following is taken from the display board on top of the wagon

This wagon was built in the 1860's and can carry two tons of slate - enough to be handled by a man or a horse.

Look at the way the slate is tightly packed together. This is to stop it from breaking during the journey. Even so, some would usually smash or snap, so if you had ordered 100 slates, you'd normally get 120 just in case.

At one time, the Festiniog Railway had over a thousand wagons like this in service, carrying slate from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog to the harbour at Porthmadog, where it was shipped around the world.
