Dr David Gwyn ('Dafydd') was a member of the Festiniog Railway Company's Board from 2006 to 2016, with responsibility for liaison with the Welsh Highland Railway Society. In 2016 he was appointed a Trustee of the Festiniog Railway Comany. From 2012 to 2016 he was Chairman of the Ffestiniog Railway Heritage Company. Born and partly raised in North Wales, he is a graduate of the Universities of Cambridge and of Trinity College, Dublin. He is a Welsh-speaker, lives in Pen y Groes, and earns his living as an independent archaeologist and heritage consultant. He is the author of several studies in industrial-era and post-Medieval archaeology, and in 2015 Dafydd's major study of the Welsh slate industry Welsh Slate or Llechi Cymru was published by the Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments of Wales; it is essential reading. He has a particular interest in the history and archaeology of railways pre-1840. He is also Chairman of the Bala Lake Railway.
