Day Log/1876-12-08

From Festipedia, hosted by the FR Heritage Group

On this day, one of four reported accidents, in a 3 month period from October to December 1876, took place

A slate wagon on a train near Portmadoc had a tyre fell off one of its wheels. The permanent way was damaged.

The tyre was made of Bowling iron by Messrs. Caine & Co. of Liverpool and was simply shrunk on to the wheel. The wagon had been running for 7 years and there was no flaw or crack in the tyre which tread had been reduced by wear by ¼ inch.

Apparently the BoT had general concerns at the time on the tyres.

No injuries recorded.
