Daily Telegrapgh, Saturday 16th May 1959

B.R. to Note

THIS afternoon the Festiniog Railway will be re-opened for the 1959 season by Maj.-Gen. G. N. Russell, president of the Institute of Transport, at Portmadoc Harbour Station.

While everyone is still reeling over the prospect of another swingeing increase in fares to meet the losses on nationalised transport, it is perhaps worth while to mention that last year the Festiniog line, with 60,000 passengers, made a profit of £201.

This year it hopes to do even better. Closed in 1946. progressively restored since 1954. it is now one of the star tourist attractions of North Wales. It does not, however, belong to the State.
