Built in 1836 to carry slate by gravity, the Festiniog Railway was the world’s first public narrow-gauge line, passengers being carried for the first time on such a narrow gauge in 1865. Unintendedly it became Britain’s most scenic railway route and is run by our oldest surviving private railway company. The passenger season begins just before Easter, with at least two trains each way between Portmadoc and Tan-y-Bwlch on Monday to Friday and one each way on Saturday and Sunday. Additional trains are often run during the Easter weekend.

S. Evans 0-4-0 ‘Prince’, now 104 years old, doing his share of the duty at Minffordd. Boston Lodge overhauls have been so thorough that it is difficult to lay a finger on any actual part of ‘Prince’ known to be that old, except, perhaps, his personality.
