Image title	THE FESTINIOG RAILWAY—one of the most beautiful railway journeys in the KingdomTHE FESTINIOG RAILWAY was originally built in 1836 fог thе transport of slates from the quarries at Blaenau Ffestiniog for export through the Harbour of Portmadoc, horses being used to haul back the empties. Steam locomotives were introduced in 1863, and in 1865 the line became the first narrow gauge railway authorised to carry passengers. Its prosperity and developments, including the famous double-ended Fairlie locomotives, attracted attention from all parts of the World and many railways were built as a result.With the decline both of the slate trade and the use of harbours by small sailing ships, the Railway’s prosperity diminished, and after the first World War buses killed the local passenger services.Summer tourist traffic remained popular, but ceased with the outbreak of War in 1939, though a desultory freight service continued until 1946 when the stock and equipment were left just as and where they were.A new administration took over in 1954, supported by a Society to give practical and financial support, and is reopening the whole line, section by section, adapting the equipment to the needs of the 20th Century tourist.From sea level at Portmadoc the line crosses the Glaslyn estuary with beautiful vistas of the Snowdon Range and Harlech and the Cambrian Coast and thenclimbs on a ledge on the hillside giving some of the finest views obtainable from a carriage window. There are 1st and 3rd Classes available, and also Licensed Buffet Cars and Observation Cars on all the trains.The Festiniog Railway Society Ltd., which works to support the Railway, publishes a quarterly magazine giving news of progress and developments on the line. Members also get free 3rd Class travel on both the Festiniog Railway and the Talyllyn Railway.You can join the Society at the Booking Office, Portmadoc Festiniog Railway Station; the full subscription is£1 per year.
