John Jones (1842)

From Festipedia, hosted by the FR Heritage Group

John Jones was born in 1842 in Llanfrothen. He was a passenger guard on the FR from 1864 (he records 17 years experience in the accident report of 15th October 1881) and continuing until about 1898. In 1871 he lived in Britannia Terrace, Portmadoc but later lived in Penrhyn. The 1901 census shows him as a grocer living at Frongoch, Penrhyn. He was too young to have retired so maybe he was the victim of one of the FR's purges when times were bad.

It seems there were normally only 2 passenger guards employed at one time although there were others who could take over duties if necessary. When John Jones left his duties were taken over by Ellis Lewis.
