Michael's day job is in the legal field specialising in Rail transport; privatisations; PFI and project work; outsourcing; joint ventures and corporate finance. Michael has extensive knowledge of the railway industry. He also advises on international projects for rail. He is a non-executive director of the Rail Freight Group and regularly speaks and chairs seminars and conferences on rail-related topics.

Michael is a non-executive director of the Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and Birmingham Railway Museum Trust.

He is also the son of Pat Whitehouse, famed for his books and railway films, mainly "Railway Roundabout" and himself one of the original Committee that rescued the Talyllyn Railway.
