The Tram as originally built was a Petrol Hydrostatic locomotive in 2005 for use on the Porthmadog Woodland Railway. As built the Tram was powered by a Honda GX360 engine and an Eaton 7 Hydrostatic pump for the drive.

It served as the mainstay of passenger services until 2017 after a failure of starter motor (which on the Honda engine is buried in an inaccessible place!). It was decided to withdraw the loco and give it a thorough overhaul of the power bogie along with a new Diesel powerplant.
