From Festipedia, hosted by the FR Heritage Group

On this day, an axle of a wagon in a slate train broke at Tanygrisiau, causing 3 wagons to derail and damaged the permanent way. The axle was made by Caine & Co. of Liverpool and had been in use since 6 July 1867. There was a flaw at the place of fracture. [1]
