Summary[edit]

Built in 1836 to carry slate by gravity, the Festiniog Railway was the world’s first public narrow-gauge line, passengers being carried for the first time on such a narrow gauge in 1865. Unintendedly it became Britain’s most scenic railway route and is run by our oldest surviving private railway company.

There is no train service during the winter months, but staff and volunteer workers will be hard at work continuing the long restoration job, preparing for the impending opening to Dduallt and constructing the deviation line - - - that will eventually recomplete the F.R.

A N Massau

Only an occasional works train breaks the silence at Portmadoc Harbour Station during the winter. In contrast to the mountainous regions inland, Portmadoc enjoys a mild climate, and falls of snow, even as light as this, are very rare.
