Sydney was born in 1872 in East Retford, Nottinghamshire. His family moved to Portmadoc shortly afterwards when his father, Frederick, took up a position with the FR. He and his brothers and sisters were bilingual.[1]

In the 1891 census Sydney was described as a railway clerk and he had been working for the FR since 1887. The records of a Board meeting in August 1893 show his pay was set at £1 4/- per week. Two further increase of 2/- per week were awarded from February 1895 and February 1896. Boyd [2] records that his salary in February 1900 was 30/- per week. On 15th October 1907, was appointed Traffic Manager. The 1901 census describes him as a Railway audit accountant and shows that he was by then married to Elizabeth and they had a son, Edgar Vyvyan aged 5 months, lived at Carnbrae, Penrhyndeudraeth and were wealthy enough to have a servant.

He had another son in 1904, Stanley Dean and a daughter Mary Julina in 1910.

He resigned from the FR on 2nd September 1909. [3] In November he started to advertise his services as an accountant and auditor quoting his FR experience. Sydney left the area and moved to Widnes, Lancashire where he became an Auditor. He died 3rd qu 1953,Prescot,Lancashire
