Welsh Highland Railway Society

From Festipedia, hosted by the FR Heritage Group

There have been two organisations with this name. The original group responsible for creating Gelert's Farm Works, later to become what is now known as the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway or WHR Ltd. See here for more information.

The Welsh Highland Railway Society, also known as Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Eryri (WHRS/CRhE) is the official supporters' body of the Welsh Highland Railway. The Society was founded in 1992 as a supporting society for the FR's rebuilding of the Welsh Highland Railway. Over the years since then, it has developed into a thriving society with a growing membership. It raises funds for important developments in rolling stock and buildings, it has provided a core of enthusiastic volunteers who work on the track or the trains, and it brings together members in a friendly team of supporters.

Area groups[edit]

The WHRS has several area groups across the UK. These are independent support organisations which are associated with the Society. These area groups have been set up in areas where a good number of Society members live in order to give a more local focus to the railway. They have proved very effective in bringing members together for social evenings and outside visits to other railways.

The groups also take part in activities such as restoring locos, making equipment, tracklaying and fundraising. They can enable people to become involved in a practical way through 'homework' and other locally based projects without always having to travel long distances to the railway itself.

Extant area groups[edit]

Some of these area groups also welcome FRS members - these are marked with a (*).
