A number of quarry steam locomotives are believed to have visited the railway before the Great War. Some are believed to have visited Boston Lodge for repairs while others may have been delivered over the FR. Such locomotives include:

The Festiniog & Blaenau Railway had an end-on junction with the FR, so it is likely that its locomotives also visited FR metals, especially as FR locomotives assisted on the F&B.

In addition, the Welsh Highland Railway's Russell, Moel Tryfan and Baldwin visited the line during the period of joint control during the 1930s.
