From Festipedia, hosted by the FR Heritage Group

On this day, the axle of a wagon in a slate train travelling between Tanygrisiau and Tan y Bwlch broke. It had been made of the best iron by Messrs. Caine & Co. of Liverpool, and had been in use since September 6th 1870. The fracture occurred close to the boss of the wheel and appeared to have been broken for some time[1]
