Patrick J. Garland, a chartered accountant, was a member of the Festiniog Railway Trust from 1973 until 1990 when replaced by Robert Riddick. This was his first involvement with the FR but he brought to the Trust the stature of one whose involvement in railway preservation started in 1950. He was Midland Area Chairman of the Stephenson Locomotive Society and was asked to organize the meeting at Birmingham in October 1950 at which the Tayllyn Railway Preservation Society was formed. He attended as an observer, but agreed to become honorary treasurer of the new society. He recollected that he thought the idea of taking over a near-derelict railway to be so "potty" that someone with practical liquidation experience would be needed before many months had elapsed. He was pleased to be proved wrong. He was treasurer of the TRRPS and financial director of that railway. He was also a founder director of the Dart Valley Railway and a member of their board. Professionally he was a partner in the international firm of Lasser, Robson Rhodes & Dunwoody of which his Birmingham practice of Impey, Garland became a part. He negotiated the reciprocal travel privileges between FRSL and TRRPS members on the two railways.[1]
