Mountaineer in 1876/1877

Mountaineer was a steam locomotive built for the Festiniog Railway in 1863. One of the line's original locomotives it became worn out and was withdrawn in 1879. It is the only one of the original four locomotives not to have been rebuilt with a saddle tank and survive to the present day.

In September 1876 it is recorded that "A new chimney holder put on, broke off by running under Bridge at Duffws". The replacement of the chimney holder dates the photograph between that date and the chimney being moved to The Prince in January 1878.
