(QNNA) What radius to curves have to be before "Gauge widening" is necessary? FarleyBrook (talk) 09:56, 26 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Influence Overseas

[edit]

The Festiniog Railway and its narrow gauge, often paired with the Faitlie locomotive, seems to have been mentioned often enough in Australia newspapers, over many decades to have had a positive influence in the adoption of narrow gauge(s) in that country. By comparison, other narrow gauge railways in Great Britain, such as the Talyllyn Railway, are hardly mentioned at all.

Initially, Australia adopted the 3ft 6in gauge, as recommended by Carl Pihl of Norway, but later an even narrow gauge was needed, and the "rounded" Festiniog gauge of 2ft 0in was adopted.
