Details and photos of the construction of Carriage 103.

Background[edit]

Construction started in late 2008 of a new Barn style carriage, a replacement for 103. This is a Ffestiniog Railway Society funded project.

Frame in Glan y Mor yard, early 2009

The underframe was delivered from the erecting shop to the carriage works in February 2009.

This is an all 3rd saloon with more leg room inside, In particular, the seat spacing is being increased from previous FR carriages to give more leg room.

Under construction, Sept 2009

By September 2009, the new 103 was completed externally, double glazed and was undergoing painting of undercoat and fitting out of the interior. The doors are inset, allowing a longer length and greater width. The Blaenau end vestibule has double doors to facilitate pushchairs/wheelchairs.

The carriage was completed in November 2009 after a test run to Blaenau. Its first use was a couple of days later on a special train from Minffordd to Porthmadog and return along with Van 4 on a special train for FRS Directors as the rebuild was a society funded project. The carriage entered regular service in February 2010.
