They were unsprung and resembled dog kennels on wheels even more than Type 1b, with open doorways but no doors. The photograph shows one carrying numberplate 41 and in HGJ 84 Adrian Gray indicates there were 44 of them in 1876. The transverse benches were so close together that the passengers had to interlock their knees, hence their name of 'zip-fasteners'. Part of one survives in the Museum Store.
