Thermit welding and gas[edit]

It MAY be possible that a gas flame is needed to heat the rail ends for the following reasons:

  • expand the rail ends so that the gap between the rails is shortened to the correct width for the Thermit welding process;
    • closing the gap might also be done with a mechanical stretcher of some kind.
  • heat the otherwise cold rail ends to a temperature suitable for the Thermit process;

Why not use gas for an ordinary gas weld? MarkTemple (talk) 05:58, 1 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
