Gordon was a director of the FR Society from 1979 to 1991, and again, in the role of Festiniog Railway Company representative on the Society board, from 1993 to 1996. Soon after his election to Society board in 1979, he was made director responsible for the management of the construction of Minffordd Hostel. He was also Chairman of the Society from 1986 to 1991. In August 1991 he was appointed General Manager of the Company, a position he held until February 1996. A "Portrait" of Gordon was published on page 28 of FR Magazine 86.

He brought the former Penrhyn Quarry Kerr Stuart 0-6-0T Sgt Murphy to the FR.

Since leaving the service of the Company Gordon has worked for Graham Whistler Productions, a company publishing railway videos and DVDs, providing both footage and commentary on some of their recent output. He has since 2004 been involved in raising money to fund the completion of the WHR and the drive to make the two railways sustainable.

His autobiographical book "I Tried to Run a Little Railway, Managing the Ffestiniog Railway 1991 - 1996" published by Adlestrop Press in 2017 (£45 available from the FR shop) includes information about his life and his perspective on his many years of involvement with the FR but particularly his time as General Manager.[1] His earlier book "Welsh Highland Railway Renaissance" is about the rebuilding of the WHR.
