Book References[edit]

The following books have templates set up for them - adding what you see, in bold and brackets causes the full entry to be shown (include the {{ and }} of course)

If you add any references, please try and keep in alpha order, and the nomenclature the same

Instructions for use are given at the end.

Clicking on the ISBN number keeps you within this wiki and enables you to search for the book elsewhere. Clicking on the OCLC number takes you away from this wiki and finds further details of the book

Magazine References[edit]

Magazine references can be entered in the following formats:-

{{cite journal |last= Surname |first=Christianname |journal=Title of Journal |issue=187 |pages=pp192-194 |id=Title of article}}

Sub templates exist for:

{{FRM}} Ffestiniog Railway Magazine

{{FRHJ}} Festiniog Railway Heritage Group Journal

{{TSR}} The Snowdon Ranger

{{WHHJ}} Welsh Highland Heritage

The predefined magazine templates accept the following tags:

  • |issue
  • |year
  • |page
  • |art
  • |author
  • |comment

Additionally the following two templates are available:

{{IM}} Inside Motion

{{MP}} Moving Pictures

These take the following tags:

  • |edition
  • |url
  • |date (MP only)
  • |comment

Instructions for use[edit]

In order to use these references, some control words and formats must be used, so they may be recognised as such by the system. These follow the same protocols as used in Wikipedia. There are 2 parts, the individual references and the end summary. The bold or italics of any type below is only to show what you need to type - it does not have to be used as such!!

Individual[edit]

At the end of the line where the reference is to be placed, type in the following:

<ref>{{Bookref-0}} pxxx </ref>

The Bookref-0 being any required entry from the list above, and the pxxx is optional as per requirement. For a single page use as p123, multi page pp123-7, or selected pages p123 / 37 / 41-45 / 65. (gaps here for aesthetic reason only and may be omitted)

So if you write....

...involved a 1600ft tunnel inclined at 1 in 130.<ref>{{Hollingsworth-FFA}} pp 32-35</ref>

it will appear as

...involved a 1600ft tunnel inclined at 1 in 130.[1]

in the text (with the (1) in blue for being the link used by the summary - for which, see below)

See reference 1 below as to how this displays

Multiple references[edit]

If a single book is used and more than one pisece of information used then create a temporary name for the reference. Something like this on the first entry
<ref name=BFR2> {{Boyd-FR2}} pp 32-35 / 37 / 39 </ref>
and like this on subsequent ones
<ref name=BFR2 />
Unfortunately any indvidual pages references must be specified in the first occurrence - see how this displays[2] below [2]

See reference 2 below as to how these display

Summaries[edit]

Having set up the various references as shown above, the system now needs to fisplay them, and this is usually towards the end of the page

Assuming there isnt a summary set up then immediately before the See also section (or at the bottom if there isnt one, type in the following:

== References ==
<div class="references-small" style="-moz-column-count:3; column-count:3;">
<<<<< manual references must be placed on this line of code >>>>>
<references />
</div>

If some manual references are in existence (i.e. not wiki type), then they should be placed between the first and second lines above

This results in the following appearing:- (Hollingsworth being the inline example, and Boyd being the summary example)

Addendum[edit]

A later addition has been the template reflist, as used in Wikipedia. This can be used instead of above where there are no summary inputs. the format is simply

{{reflist}}
