The Fairlie Patent locomotive needs a flexible sealed joint to take the high pressure steam to the cylinders mounted on those bogies.

Are such joints easy to design and build, or were there problems?

The Garratt locomotive also has flexible steam joints. FarleyBrook (talk) 04:24, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There were problems. In pre-restoration days Fairlies at work tended to be wreathed in steam leaking from the joints in the live steam pipes. These days flexible pipes are used. --Peter Harrison (talk) 16:39, 15 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I seem to recall stories about there being a ball joint on the pivot and that an apprentice had to successfully make one before he finished his time. Heritagejim (talk) 21:31, 16 October 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
